How should I deliver my files for mastering?

Files for mastering can be delivered by post on a data CD or DVD, by FTP or via www.yousendit.com

What format should I deliver my files in for mastering?

Files for mastering should be delivered as stereo-interleaved (not split mono) 24 files bit in either the aif. or wav. formats. The sample-rate should be kept to the same as you have been working at. So, if your protools session (or Cubase or Logic etc.) is at 44.1khz, then you should deliver the files at 44.1 khz and NOT samplerate convert your files before mastering. If you are mixing analog, then you should bring the files at whatever sample rate you recorded your mix into you’re A/D converter at.

Should I use compression / limiting before mastering?

This is a good question, and is something that is much discussed on internet mastering forums!
My take on it is this: If you’re using compression on your stereo buss and you like the sound of it, then of course you should bring that file to the mastering session. However, if you’re not 100% sure that the compression is what you want, then why not also bring a mix without compression? It only takes a few minute to make an extra mix without stereo buss processing. The same is also true with regard to limiting. The less headroom the mastering engineer has to work with, the less options he has to improve your music.

How long ahead to I need to book a mastering session?

For album mastering, try to book at least 2 weeks ahead. However, if you’re in a hurry, it’s often possible to fit you in sooner, but that depends on the workload we have at that time. For mastering a few tracks sent over the internet, we can usually fit that in within days.
